Libby is a beautiful chocolate swirled brindle girl that is shy and wants to be so friendly, but is still learning how to trust. Libby came to us after a call came in from the local police department asking for assistance in evaluating whether two dogs they had been put in charge of were aggressive or not. Imagining the worst, instead our staff manager and assistant found two miserable, broken hearted little dogs huddled behind a recently deserted rental property, chained up and terrified. Libby and what we suspect to be her biological sister Alice, were left to fend for themselves for an unknown period of time. They were both a horribly strong heartworm positive, crawling in insects, and had lost some hair and most of their self confidence. They have truly seen the very worst that this life, and humans, have to offer.

After many months of gentle and consistent care by our loving staff, Alice and Libby’s personalities are both blossoming. While Alice has bloomed a bit faster than Libby, Libby is starting to get the hang of it. She is still learning to trust. Libby is afraid of new situations and only wants to be feel safe, warm, and well fed. She takes great confidence from her sister’s and other dogs’ presences and does best when she is around other dogs. She enjoys romping with them when she thinks no one is watching. She is still learning. She doesn’t really understand what toys are, she doesn’t understand what it is to be in a stable home life. But she does understand when kindness is shown to her. She does understand a soft dog bed and the companionship of other dogs. She does understand when her food bowl being consistently full, and she is so grateful!

Libby is 37 pounds. She has been fully vetted, her heartworms treated and her skin cleared up. She does walk well on a leash. She understands and appreciates having a safe place to hide, her crate. Libby’s ideal home environment would include a safe, loving, and perceptive family that understand her past trauma and is willing to work with her to teach her that she doesn’t have to be afraid of this life. She would probably come to her full potential in having another dog friend that she can learn from and follow after as part of her pack. Libby is not broken, but she does need guidance to continue to grow- but don’t we all need something like that?
